City on a Hill: Newt Gingrich

Although the “city on a hill” idea was once used by John F. Kennedy, it has more recently become a Republican phrase that points toward American exceptionalism.  In that context, it is taken to mean that America is  – in the words of this clip – a” beacon of light” to the rest of the world.  To be clear , we review these video clips not to promote a low view of our country nor as agents for the Democrats, but to unlink a phrase from the Sermon on the Mount from politics and to undo the presumptuous idea that America is a second Israel.

This clip which, in retrospect, appears to have been part of the groundwork for Newt Gingrich’s campaign for the presidency, is a particularly striking example.
